Dealing with pimples can be a real nightmare. Acne effects 85% of Australians aged 15 – 24. It doesn't seem to matter where you live or what your age is you could get find yourself with acne, but don't freak out because all types of acne can be controlled through safe and effective treatments. There are many different opinions on what acne or pimples are and what causes them, this can make it confusing to know what to do.

What is Acne? Acne occurs when oil glands, or pores, become blocked. Inside this blocked pore bacteria grows and causes a red, raised spot called a pimple. The face, chest, neck, shoulders and upper back are common areas to be affected by acne as they have a lot of oil glands.

Men and adolescent boys are more likely to get acne in response to the bodies production of male hormones but it normally settles down in their early 20's. For girls it is common to get acne around the time of their periods and that can happen until their late 30s or 40s. A family history of acne it can increase your chance of getting acne.

Acne is a medical condition so it best to get medical advice for acne treatment. It is important to realise that there is no quick fix with pimples. It can take weeks to a few months for pimples to get under control. Acne can be more than just on the surface of the skin, it is often linked to depression, stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that the more stressed you get, the more likely it is for acne to flare up.

So it is important to relax and if you are feeling depressed about issues in your life to talk to someone who can help. Beyond Blue and Lifeline are free services which can provide the appropriate support. All About Acne is a great website run by a group of medical professionals who have volunteered their time. It provides useful advice and tips on acne and acne treatments.
