The agricultural industry is experiencing a significant shortage of skilled and
reliable jackaroos and jillaroos. The attraction of working in big cities and in
the mining industry is drawing potential employees away from the agricultural
industry. Jackaroo and Jillaroo courses have been playing an important role in
reducing the rural skills shortage. For the last 10 years, the Dubbo-based TAFE
NSW Western Institute has been running a practical course for aspiring
Agricultural employees.

The course is the only one of its kind in Australia and is designed for people
that have a desire to work in agricultural industry, but have little or no rural
experience. The course includes training on safe chainsaw operation, quad and
bike riding, small mechanics, fencing, work safety, livestock management, and
job searching.
The eight-week long study program prepares students, for the hard and long
working hours, demanded by jobs on the land. The course is 20% theory based and
80% practical and involves a 4-day campout. Participants come from all over
Australia, and are from all ages and backgrounds. The only similarity between
the students is their passion for working on the land.
Students who graduate receive a Certificate 2 in Agriculture and help in finding
a job placement. This particular course has built a solid reputation with
employers, who are so impressed with the skills of graduates that they actively
seek out the latest graduates. This means each student is high in demand.
According to Course Organiser, Geoff Bastion, 20% of the students decide that
they will not pursue a job in the rural industry. This means that of this class
of 12, 3 students will not make it into the rural industry. Country Matters will
be checking back with this class in a few weeks to find out.
