Central western NSW is home to one of Australia's most famous attractions, the Taronga Western Plains Zoo. This zoo houses over 1500 animals from all over the world and comprises of more than 300 hectares of bushland. Unlike other zoos in Australia the Western Plains Zoo has an open range, which means there are no barriers between you and the animals. The ingenious planning of the zoo provides visitors with a very unique safari styled experience. Walls and fences have been replaced by concealed moats.

The Taronga Western Plains Zoo has a 6km road that winds past all the animal attractions, bush, lakes and watering holes. This zoo allows visitors to drive their own cars around the Zoo but you can also walk, bike ride or travel in an electrical cart. Bikes and carts are available for hire from the zoo. The zoo is open every day from 9am to 4pm and every ticket is valid for two consecutive days. Which means you can come back the next day and see any animals that you've missed. Western Plains Zoo provides a list of the daily activities and talks online, which will help you, plan your trip ahead of time.

The zoo first opened in 1977 and since then has achieved international recognition for their care of wildlife and their breeding programs. Most notably the Western Plains Zoo was the first institution able to successfully hand raise a Scimitar Horned Oryx calf, whose mother died whilst in labour. This year two Cheetah cubs, a Bongo calf and a rare southern white Rhinoceros were all safely delivered in the zoo. Breeding these critically endangered animals, like the Cheetah, is an important way of helping dwindling world populations. It is estimated that there are less than 10,000 cheetahs in the wild today.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo also offers a more personal experience to animal lovers with a behind the scenes tour. It is called Animal Encounters and gives you the chance to pat and feed some of the zoo's exotic animals. If you are feeling even more adventurous try the Zoo's Roar and Snore program, which operates every Saturday night throughout the year (and other selected dates). Guests are taken on a night safari - dine under the stars and sleep in a tent inside the zoo.
