Every year in the quiet town of Borenore, 15kms west of Orange, the oldest
annual agricultural exhibition in the country takes place. This year was the
57th year for the Australian National Field Days; it ran over four days, held
over 600 exhibitors and welcomed over 4,000 people.

The ANFD provides rural communities with a place to get together and share
information. New agricultural equipment, services and concepts are exchanged
between producers. This year the New Farm Inventors exhibit featured many highly
creative and cost effective inventions all developed to make life on the land a
little easier. The Farm Inventor of the Year Competitions are run at Field Days
throughout Australia, but the finals are held at the ANFD. Entries are judged on
their practically application and their innovation.
The 2008 Farm Inventor of the Year Competition Winners were:
Ashley Olsson - Winner of the Farm Inventor Competition Under $1,000 Division.
Ashley developed a New Fence Post that is around 60% quicker to erect. No extra
tools are needed to put up fences or to maintain them. This invention takes a
lot of hassle out of fencing and saves a lot of time.
Steve Thompson - Second Place in the Farm Inventor Competition Under $1,000
Division.
Steve invented an easy and inexpensive method of covering hay with plastic. This
ingenious device ensures that plastic coverings will stay on haystacks and
protects them from the weather.
Don and Lois Geering - Encouragement Award in the Farm Inventor Competition
Under $1,000 Division.
This resourceful couple invented the Caravan & Trailer Mate, a simple device
that permits the easy and safe manoeuvring of caravans and trailers, without
having to attach it to a car.
James Wheildon - Winner of the Farm Inventor Competition Over $1,000 Division.
James designed the Universal Tool Bar, a 16m width rigg, which can be used in
planting, spraying and all other light applications in the field. The idea
originated while James was working in the cotton fields and has taken twelve
months to develop. His design will help producers save on fuel, on labour time
and add to compaction in the field.
