The health crisis in rural and remote Australian is getting worse every year;
almost 20,000 health professionals are needed just to ensure basic health
services are met.

The University of New England's School of Rural Medicine is training students
with the goal of keeping rural health professionals in country areas. The new
facilities and course are attracting students from bigger cities, while the
support from GP's and local communities are keeping medical professional there.
The local communities play an important role in helping the students' transition
to rural life.
In an effort to attract students to rural practices and to improve rural and
remote health care, several programs are being offered to prospective students.
A number of placements are being offered in rural locations to medical students.
These aim to develop a better understanding of the challenges and rewards
associated with non-metropolitan health care.
