'Click go the shears boys, click, click, click, Wide is his blow and his hands
move quick.'
Shearing has always been the backbone of the Australian wool industry but these
days with reports that wool production and prices are falling, the number of
skilled shearers has also been falling. Efforts are being made to attract new
recruits into the industry. This includes training courses from around the
country and new developments into making the job easier and less demanding.
Shearing is a job well known for its extremely physically demanding conditions.

Shearers often travel long distances from property to property to work during
the shearing season. It is not commonly known, but shearing also provides many
opportunities to travel internationally. Many countries like America and New
Zealand require extra shear hands. Also, some lucky shearers are able to travel
and enter into international shearing competitions. This year the World Shearing
Championships were held in Bjerkreim, Norway and the next World Shearing
Championships are to be held in Llanelwedd, Wales in 2010.
New developments in shearing practises like the handy-sheer, shearing platforms
and upright shearing, have reduced the risk of getting shearing related injuries
such as back pain and sore wrists. The Shear Ezy is a portable machine designed
to assist the shearer to efficiently sheer the sheep whilst in an upright
position and to produce fleece ready for chasing.
Most training is on the job, although there are some courses available through
TAFE that provide structured learning. Courses also have the benefit of
instructing on the newest shearing techniques. TAFE NSW Western Institute offers
a Shearing Certificate, where students can develop technical and manual skills
commonly used in shearing. It is suitable for existing rural workers and
shearing shed staff who want to develop their skills.
