Regional Armidale is a town of extremely broad multicultural diversity, with
over sixty different nationalities calling it home. A number of Sudanese
refugees who have fled the ongoing violence in their native lands, in hope of a
better life, have also been welcomed to Armidale.
Since gaining independence from British and Egyptian rule in 1956, Sudan -
Africa's largest nation - has been tragically ravaged by civil war, as many of
the large tribes struggle for power. This tragedy has been compounded by
unrelenting drought and grim famine. All too frequently Sudanese families have
been forced to flee their homes.

However, Australia's humanitarian programmes have enabled many Sudanese to gain
residency in Australia, and a large number wish to live in rural areas which
more closely resemble the lands they have left behind. They are also keen to
raise children who are all too familiar with war, in peaceful surroundings.
Research conducted by the African Think Tank has found that Africans living in
rural Australia are more likely to perform at school and find employment. This
significantly aids community integration, and helps ward off the potential
dangers of drugs, alcohol and crime which are often exacerbated by community
alienation.
A number of local organisations, such as the Armidale Dumaresq Council, are
facilitating and supporting the refugee's settlement process. The Armidale
Sanctuary's Jan Wyles is involved in helping the Sudanese adapt to life in
Australia. In the past three years, the Armidale Sanctuary has helped six
families achieve tasks which can seem daunting to refugees in a very foreign
land: finding a home; preparing for education and employment; and providing
crucial support, as the refugees undergo the healing process to overcome the
often extreme trauma they have endured.
