The lure of gold in Orange played a part in its development. Since those golden
days, the region has been known for its fruit growing including apples,
cherries, stone fruit and grapes. Grapes (for commercial purposes) first arrived
in Orange on a railway line in 1877.

Wine industry began in this region in early 1980s and grew quickly to 1350
hectares of vine fields. The first winery was built in 1983 and by1996 there
were 10 wineries in the area. In 2007 this has grown to 55 vineyards. The Orange
wine region includes the areas of Orange, Cabonne and Blayney. Since the 1990's
Australia's wine industry has been rapidly growing and we are now the 4th
largest wine exporter behind France, Italy and Spain. Around 60% of the wines
produced in Australia are exported around the world.
Geology, rich soils, cool climates and temperatures make Orange a great place
for growing grapes. Importantly the high altitude and cool climate give the
Orange region its unique features for wine production. Orange's Mount Canobolas
provides rich basalt soils and cool weather and ample rainfall, giving the
area's wine a distinct flavour and colour. The region is planted with 60% red
wine varieties and 40% white wine varieties.
Chardonnay is the most commonly planted variety, followed by Sauvignon Blanc,
however Orange produces many other varieties well worth sampling:
Gewurztraminer, Barbera, Viognier, Riesling, Sangiovese and Zinfandel.
Chardonnay, due to its need for cool climates, has been easy for growers to
excel at, as well as the Pinot Noir, which grows well in high altitudes. In the
red varieties, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are the majority of the crops,
followed by Merlot and Pinot Noir.
Orange has recently been promoted as a food & wine industry under one brand name
- Brand Orange. Brand Orange has been created through a partnership with the
state government, Orange City council and ORVA, a body of representatives from
the grape growers and wine makers in the Orange region. The aim of Brand Orange
is to encourage greater recognition for the wine industry and to entice more
tourists towards the area, creating more development and investment for Orange.
