A few weeks ago, we brought you the story of a group of young students aspiring
to be Jackaroos and Jillaroos. These eleven students underwent intensive
training at TAFE NSW Western Institute in Dubbo. The course is structured for
individuals seeking a career in the agricultural sector, but who do not have the
necessary skills or experience on the land.

Students are taught practical
skills, giving prospective employers the confidence that their future stockmen
and women can do the job. We have gotten in contact with the Dubbo class of 2008
to see how they went after eight weeks of long hours and hard work.
You will be pleased to know that all students completed the course and have
received their Certificate 2 (NRT). Most already have agricultural jobs lined up
and those who don't have positive signs from Western Australian and Northern
Territory properties who will be employing again once the wet season is over.
A few students, like Nathan and Kate, were sought out by S. Kidman and Co. and
Chloe by Jumbuck Pastoral. Others like Grant and Chris will be working in the
family business; whereas, Kellie, Bernie and Emma will be working on private
farming properties in Australia.
Usually around twenty per cent of students discover that they no longer wish to
pursue agricultural work (which did not happen in this case). More than half of
the students are going on to study further, with students like Aliah and Dale
seeking Shearing and Wool Handling Certificates and Camille embarking on an
Agricultural Traineeship.
All students have certainly become outstanding Jackaroos and Jillaroos.
